What is the EMDR Session Log: SUD & VOC Across Sets?

EMDR desensitization, installation and body scan phases involve repeated sets of bilateral stimulation with brief client reports between sets. Process notes support continuity, supervision and documentation.

Why it works

The standard protocol monitors SUD during desensitization and VOC during installation (Shapiro, 2018). Structured notes support fidelity and consultation (Leeds, 2016).

When to use it

  • EMDR reprocessing sessions
  • Consultation and supervision
  • Incomplete sessions
  • Documentation

How to use it in session

  1. Note target and BLS settings.
  2. Record brief reports per set.
  3. Check SUD periodically.
  4. Record installation and VOC.
  5. Document body scan and closure.

Clinician tips

  • Keep entries very brief.
  • Mark channels and interweaves.
  • Note incomplete sessions for re-evaluation.

Worked example

Set 6: “Feeling it move from chest to throat.” SUD: 5. Ending SUD: 1, VOC 6, body scan clear.

Frequently asked questions

How often should SUD be checked?

Typically when a channel seems to clear or at the end of a chain of associations, per your training.

What if the session is incomplete?

Use closure procedures and note the ending SUD for re-evaluation next session.
