What is the What Is EMDR Therapy? (Client Handout)?

EMDR therapy is a structured, eight-phase psychotherapy for trauma and other distressing experiences. Clients briefly focus on a memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, supporting adaptive processing of the memory.

Why it works

The World Health Organization (2013) recommends EMDR for post-traumatic stress disorder in adults and children. A meta-analysis found EMDR effective for PTSD and possibly other conditions (Cuijpers et al., 2020).

When to use it

  • Before starting EMDR
  • Clients curious or anxious about EMDR
  • Informed consent discussions
  • Family psychoeducation

How to use it in session

  1. Review the handout in the preparation phase.
  2. Explain bilateral stimulation options.
  3. Agree a stop signal.
  4. Identify a calm place word.
  5. Invite questions and concerns.

Clinician tips

  • Use the train or movie metaphor.
  • Normalize between-session processing.
  • Emphasize control and choice.

Worked example

Stop signal: raise my hand. Calm place word: lake. Question: “Will I have to talk about every detail?”
