What is the Sleep Window Weekly Review?

Sleep restriction therapy titrates time in bed based on sleep efficiency to consolidate sleep and strengthen homeostatic sleep drive.

Why it works

Edinger and Carney (2014) describe sleep window titration rules. Brief behavioural treatment uses sleep efficiency-based adjustments (Troxel et al., 2012).

When to use it

  • CBT-I with sleep restriction
  • Chronic insomnia
  • Weekly sessions
  • Telehealth CBT-I

How to use it in session

  1. Average diary data.
  2. Calculate efficiency.
  3. Apply titration rules.
  4. Set new window.
  5. Review weekly.

Clinician tips

  • Use caution with bipolar disorder, seizures and drowsy-driving risk.
  • Keep a fixed wake time.
  • Tailor rules to the client.

Worked example

Week 2: in bed 6 h, asleep 5.4 h, efficiency 90%; new window 11:15 pm to 6:00 am.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sleep efficiency?

Divide total sleep time by time in bed and multiply by 100.

Is sleep restriction safe?

It’s safe for most people when guided by a clinician, with precautions for some conditions.
