What is the What My Body Does for Me?

Functionality appreciation focuses on what the body can do rather than how it looks. It’s a component of positive body image and an evidence-based body image intervention.

Why it works

The Expand Your Horizon program improved body appreciation and satisfaction by training focus on body functionality (Alleva et al., 2015). Positive body image includes appreciating the body’s functions (Tylka & Wood-Barcalow, 2015).

When to use it

  • Body dissatisfaction
  • Chronic illness and disability (adapted)
  • Ageing and pregnancy
  • Body image groups

How to use it in session

  1. Explain functionality focus.
  2. Fill in each area.
  3. Rate appreciation.
  4. Write a note.
  5. Revisit weekly.

Clinician tips

  • Adapt for disability and chronic illness.
  • Avoid comparing bodies.
  • Combine with neutrality work.

Worked example

Movement: carries my kids, dances at weddings (8). Note: thank you for getting me through a hard year.

Frequently asked questions

Is this toxic positivity?

No. You don’t have to love your body; this simply broadens focus beyond appearance.

What if my body is unwell?

Notice any function that’s still available, even small ones.
