What is the How I Draw on Faith in Hard Times?

Religious coping can be positive (seeking spiritual support, benevolent reappraisal) or negative (spiritual discontent, punishing reappraisal). Both relate to mental health outcomes.

Why it works

Pargament et al. (1998) identified patterns of positive and negative religious coping and their links to adjustment. Spiritually integrated psychotherapy addresses both resources and struggles (Pargament, 2007).

When to use it

  • Clients for whom faith is important
  • Illness, grief and crisis
  • Spiritual struggles
  • Faith-based settings

How to use it in session

  1. Explore supportive coping.
  2. Name struggles.
  3. Identify resources.
  4. Plan use.
  5. Revisit.

Clinician tips

  • Respect all traditions and none.
  • Don’t impose spiritual practices.
  • Consult faith leaders with consent.

Worked example

Supports: evening prayer, my church group. Struggle: ‘Why did God let this happen?’ This week: talk with my pastor.

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to feel angry with God?

Many people experience spiritual anger during hard times; it can be explored safely in therapy.

Do I have to be religious for this?

No. Spirituality includes meaning, connection and values beyond religion.
