Key facts
What is the Faith Transition Reflection?
Faith transitions include questioning, deconstruction, conversion, leaving or deepening religious beliefs. They often involve religious and spiritual struggles such as doubt, moral conflict and strained relationships with religious communities.
Why it works
Religious and spiritual struggles are common and associated with distress, but can also lead to growth (Exline et al., 2014). Developmental models describe faith as changing across the lifespan (Fowler, 1981).
When to use it
- Religious doubt or deconstruction
- Leaving a faith community
- Conflict with religious family
- Religious trauma (with care)
How to use it in session
- Take a neutral, respectful stance.
- Explore values held and questioned.
- Name losses and grieve them.
- Identify relational impacts.
- Clarify current needs.
Clinician tips
- Don’t steer toward or away from faith.
- Screen for religious trauma and pace accordingly.
- Consider cultural and family context.
