What is the Eating with Attunement: Hunger, Satisfaction & Food Freedom?

Attuned or intuitive eating emphasizes responding to internal hunger and satiety cues, rejecting restrictive diet rules, and valuing satisfaction. It’s used in body image and disordered eating work.

Why it works

Tribole and Resch (2020) describe the intuitive eating framework. A meta-analysis found intuitive eating is associated with better body image, wellbeing and less disordered eating (Linardon et al., 2021).

When to use it

  • Chronic dieting
  • Body image concerns
  • Emotional eating
  • Recovery from disordered eating (with specialist input)

How to use it in session

  1. Track a few meals.
  2. Rate hunger, fullness and satisfaction.
  3. Notice food rules.
  4. Choose a small experiment.
  5. Reflect with compassion.

Clinician tips

  • For active eating disorders, prioritize regular eating and specialist care.
  • Avoid weight-focused language.
  • Celebrate curiosity, not perfection.

Worked example

Lunch: hunger 7, fullness 6, satisfaction 3. Rule: “Carbs are bad.” Experiment: include bread with lunch twice this week.
