What is the Our Relationship Vision & Shared Values?

Creating shared meaning, a sense of common purpose, rituals and values, is an important dimension of long-term relationships. This worksheet structures a conversation about each partner’s hopes and helps the couple articulate a joint vision.

Why it works

Shared meaning and rituals of connection are described as protective in long-term relationships (Gottman & Silver, 2015). Attachment-focused couples work highlights the importance of feeling like a team with a shared direction (Johnson, 2008).

When to use it

  • Premarital and early-relationship counselling
  • Couples after a crisis rebuilding
  • Life transitions (new baby, moves, retirement)
  • Couples maintenance and enrichment

How to use it in session

  1. Each partner completes their column privately.
  2. Compare answers in session with curiosity.
  3. Highlight overlap and respectful differences.
  4. Write a shared vision together.
  5. Revisit annually.

Clinician tips

  • Differences are normal; look for ways both can be honoured.
  • Keep the vision short and personal.
  • Use as a reference point during conflict.

Worked example

Shared vision: “We want a home that’s calm and full of friends, where we tackle problems as a team and still make time to play.” Values: teamwork, warmth, adventure.

Frequently asked questions

What if our visions are very different?

That’s useful information. Explore the needs behind each vision; a therapist can help find workable common ground.

Can unmarried or new couples use this?

Yes. It works for any committed couple at any stage.
