Key facts
What is the Gentle Start-Up Conversation Script?
A gentle (or softened) start-up is a way of raising a complaint that describes one’s own feelings and a specific situation and asks for a positive change, rather than criticizing the partner’s character. It is a widely taught skill in couples communication programs.
Why it works
Research by Gottman and colleagues found that the way a conflict discussion starts strongly predicts how it unfolds, and that harsh start-up and criticism are associated with relationship distress (Gottman & Silver, 2015). Emotionally focused approaches similarly emphasize expressing underlying needs rather than blame (Johnson, 2008).
When to use it
- Couples stuck in criticism and defensiveness
- Premarital counselling
- Individual clients rehearsing difficult conversations
- Family communication (adapted)
How to use it in session
- Contrast harsh and gentle start-ups with examples.

- Script each part of the opening.
- Check against the list and rehearse in session.
- Debrief after the conversation.
Clinician tips
- Timing matters: avoid starting when either partner is flooded or rushed.
- Pair with the Conflict Repair Guide for after arguments.
- Not suitable where there is coercive control or violence.

What if my partner still gets defensive?

Is this only for couples?
No. Gentle start-ups help in any relationship, including with family, friends and colleagues.
