What is Supporting a Family Member With Psychosis?

Practical guidance for families and supporters. Calm, low-pressure support helps. Look after yourself too.

When to use it

  • Psychoeducation after a first episode
  • Relapse prevention with a care team
  • Supporting families alongside psychiatric care

How to use it in session

  1. Explain the purpose and check that the client wants to do this.
  2. Helpful approaches.
  3. Warning signs we have noticed.
  4. Who we will call, and when.
  5. What I need to stay well as a supporter.
  6. Agree one small next step.

Clinician tips

  • Use alongside psychiatric care, not instead of it.
  • Assess risk, including command hallucinations, at every contact.
  • Involve family and supporters with the client’s consent.
