What is Return-to-Work Plan?

Plan a steady return after a mental-health leave. Work with your doctor and employer. A gradual return is often the most sustainable.

When to use it

  • Workplace stress and burnout
  • Returning to work after leave
  • Financial stress and money conflict
  • Confidence and imposter feelings

How to use it in session

  1. Explain the purpose and check that the client wants to do this.
  2. Complete the table: week, hours / days, duties.
  3. Early signs I need to slow down.
  4. Accommodations that would help.
  5. What I will say to colleagues.
  6. Agree one small next step.

Clinician tips

  • Separate what the client can influence from what they cannot.
  • Refer to financial, legal or employment specialists when needed.
  • Consider systemic factors as well as individual coping.
