What is the Attachment Alarm & Protest Behaviours Log?

Protest behaviours are attempts to re-establish connection when attachment needs feel threatened, such as repeated contacting, criticism or jealousy. Withdrawal is the deactivating counterpart. Emotionally focused therapy helps people express underlying attachment needs directly.

Why it works

Emotionally focused therapy frames relational distress as attachment protest and helps partners express softer primary emotions and needs (Johnson, 2019). Popular attachment literature describes common protest behaviours in anxious attachment (Levine & Heller, 2010).

When to use it

  • Anxious or avoidant attachment patterns
  • Relationship conflict
  • Couples therapy (individual homework)
  • Jealousy and reassurance seeking

How to use it in session

  1. Explain the attachment alarm.
  2. Log triggers and reactions without judgement.
  3. Identify the need underneath.
  4. Draft a direct, vulnerable ask.
  5. Practise in session before trying it.

Clinician tips

  • Validate protest as understandable.
  • Avoid labelling clients ‘needy’.
  • Screen for abuse before encouraging vulnerability with a partner.

Worked example

Trigger: partner didn’t reply for 4 hours. Alarm: 8. Did: sent 6 texts. Need: to know I matter. Ask: “When I don’t hear from you I get anxious. Could you send a quick note when you’re busy?”

Frequently asked questions

Are protest behaviours manipulative?

They’re usually unconscious attempts to restore connection, though they can push people away.

Does this apply to avoidant attachment?

Yes. Withdrawing or shutting down is the other side of the same alarm.
