EMDR Bilateral Stimulation Tool (Light & Sound)

A browser-based bilateral stimulation (BLS) tool for clinicians trained in EMDR. Use it in the office on a second screen, or share your screen (with computer audio) in telehealth sessions.

How to use it in session

  1. Agree on the target and check your client is resourced and within their window of tolerance.
  2. Choose speed, direction and light colour. Many clinicians start with slower, shorter sets.
  3. If using sound, ask your client to wear headphones so the tones alternate left and right.
  4. Press Start (or Space). The set stops automatically after the chosen number of passes, with a soft chime.
  5. Check in between sets, then continue, adjust or close down the session as your protocol requires.

Features

  • Left/right, diagonal or vertical movement
  • Smooth or even motion and speed from 0.3 to 2.5 passes per second
  • Adjustable light size, colour and background, including a soft light background
  • Sound options: a tap at each side, or a tone that follows the light (stereo)
  • Set length from 12 to 60 passes, or continuous
  • Full-screen mode and keyboard shortcuts

Safety and scope

Use bilateral stimulation only within your scope of practice and training, after appropriate preparation and resourcing. Stop if your client becomes overwhelmed, and use your grounding and closure procedures. Rapidly moving lights can be uncomfortable for some people; check for photosensitivity, migraine or motion sensitivity first.
