What is the ADHD Task Launch Plan?

Difficulties with task initiation, time management and sustained effort are core executive-function challenges in ADHD. This worksheet applies strategies from CBT for adult ADHD, such as breaking tasks down, externalizing reminders and using rewards, to help clients start tasks they have been avoiding.

Why it works

CBT targeting organization, planning and procrastination reduces ADHD symptoms in adults, including those already on medication (Safren et al., 2005). External structure compensates for executive-function differences described in ADHD research (Barkley, 2015).

When to use it

  • Adult ADHD and procrastination
  • Students with assignment avoidance
  • Autistic clients with executive-function challenges
  • Coaching alongside medication management

How to use it in session

  1. Choose one task the client keeps avoiding.
  2. Break it down until the first step takes under five minutes.
  3. Select two or three environmental supports.
  4. Set a specific start time and reward.
  5. Review what worked and refine the system.

Clinician tips

  • Avoid moralizing language like ‘lazy’ or ‘just try harder’.
  • Body doubling, virtual or in person, is often surprisingly effective.
  • Celebrate starting, not only finishing.

Worked example

Task: file taxes. Step 1: find last year’s login (3 min). Supports: 15-min timer, coffee, sister on video call. Reward: episode of a favourite show.

Frequently asked questions

Is this only for people with an ADHD diagnosis?

No. Anyone who struggles with procrastination can benefit, though it is designed with ADHD brains in mind.

What is body doubling?

Working on a task while someone else is present, in person or online, which can increase focus and follow-through.
